Chevrolet Equinox - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox ranks 3 out of 24 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 20 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Equinox, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Previously a good entry within its class, the Equinox gets a much-needed makeover for 2010. With more power, a revamped interior and nearly best-in-class fuel economy, it now has what it takes to become a class leader.

Even better is the fact that Chevrolet isn't charging a premium for the improvements. In fact, they've dropped the price of the new Equinox by more than $1,000. It starts at a little over $22,600, which is about average for the class. Reviewers praise the updated Equinox. "Overnight the Equinox has gone from outdated to outstanding,” says Kelley Blue Book. The 2010 Equinox was a finalist for the 2010 North American Truck of the Year award and was one of three nominees for Road & Travel Magazine's International Truck of the Year award.

The most standout aspect of the new Equinox is its excellent fuel economy. Though it isn’t the most exciting vehicle to drive, its 32 mpg base highway fuel economy rating is the highest in its class (along with its GMC Terrain platform-mate). Its five-seat cabin also comes with a spacious and versatile sliding rear seat, which you won't find on some competitors like the Ford Escape Hybrid.

Because of its superb fuel economy, the Equinox is actually a great alternative to a hybrid like the Escape. It is rated at one mile per gallon more on the highway, though its 22 mpg city rating can’t match the Escape Hybrid’s 34 mpg. Still, if you do a lot of highway driving, you’ll save about $7,200 by opting for the Equinox.
